Thoughts On Opening Night

by thoughtsonthedead

  • When John Mayer started singing Touch of Grey, I turned the ’88 back on; I have been working on this one unremarkable show for eight hours now.
  • The first set was good and well-practiced and entirely too slow.
  • The folks in attendance didn’t seem to mind; they boogied.
  • I want Bobby to play Lost Sailor on every night of this tour.
  • Just to shove it up the drummers’ asses.
  • Mickey thinks he’s Daft Punk.
  • Deaf Punk.
  • Billy is paying–at best–thirty percent attention.
  • Fuck ’em: play your sea shanty every night, Bob.
  • I’ll give this conglomeration of musicians noodling under a Stealie credit, though: it’s almost impossible to fuck up the transition between Skipknot! and Franklin’s, but you did, and I salute you for it.
  • It’s technically not a transition: one song stops and the next starts, but you don’t tune and smoke and start fights for seven minutes.
  • You almost have to try to screw that up; it was adorable.
  • Sorry to do this, but that ’88 (6/28/88 from Saratoga) has an absolutely killer Heavy Metal Garcia Space that would be the highpoint of any ’78 show.
  • That is unfortunately and  immediately followed by an I Will Take You Home that stops this show just like it stopped every other one it was played at.
  • Back in Albany, the drummers have been given a larger budget than the Farewell Shoes; they have used these funds to hire young people, who used “apps” and “patches” and “computers” to make Drums just as awesome as it could be.
  • Drums was objectively awesome, and I hope they change it up every night and at the end of the tour, someone stitches it together: I would listen to that shit.
  • I would listen so hard.
  • They played In A Silent Way after Drums, right?
  • Then they did some other tunes, jammed some other jams: what matters is that there was laughter and dancing and tears and maybe just a little drool from the Albanians assembled.
  • They’re the ones with votes, and they overwhelmingly voted “YAAAAY!”
  • With a minority vote of “WOOOO!”
  • One more thing about the ’88: Garcia kills the Stella Blue so hard that noobs will probably freak right the fuck out; if you are a noob, do not to listen to this shit here.
  • Also, noob, do not play the Not Fade Away right after because the Big Guy is just losing his damn mind in this bitch.
  • Y’all bitches wanna trap?
  • Stop that.
  • Jeff Chimenti is a beautiful silver unicorn.
  • Stop that, too.
  • I was informed–and photos substantiate the claim–that Oteil Burbridge had been employed to play bass, but did not hear him; this is a common problem with AUD tapes, which is essentially what the stream was.
  • The fact that there was no official stream is so bush league that if every hedge, shrub, topiary, brier, and bramble in the world began to act in concord, it still wouldn’t be as bush league as not having a stream.
